With 200 photos chosen from the archives to show Newcastle upon Tyne in a bygone era, we go on an interesting visual tour of the city. Naturally, the Tyne takes centre stage; in order to meet the increasing needs of newscastle transportation and industry, new bridges are constructed and old ones are destroyed. Redeveloped following the Great Fire of 1854, the quayside served as the Great Northern Coalfield's economic hub and bustling market. Then there was a greater divide between the affluent and the poor. The living circumstances in the inner city region are very different from those of Jesmond Towers, which is home to an enterprising shipbuilder, and The Gables, which is home to the Richardson family, who run Elswick Leather Works. In its 1930s slum clearing initiatives, the council relocated 30,000 people. In their free time, people enjoyed a wide range of activities, including football (of course), curling, bowling, and rowing. For Newcastle FC, in particular, 1955 was a great year. On the other hand, The Hoppings was a well-liked yearly event that, because of its unique blend of freak shows, rides, and entertainment, was dubbed "the greatest show on earth." With the use of images and storytelling, all of this and much more is wonderfully brought to life, making for an engaging and unforgettable read.
