Newport County Football Club

Regular price £17.50 £0.00

With over 200 action photographs, team groups, player portraits, cartoons and other
items of memorabilia, this book illustrates the history of Newport County Football Club Are you, a family member, or an ancestor in one of the 100 pictures?

From Lysaght’s to Lucas’
This remarkable collection of over 200 photographs, showing both on-the-field and behind-the-scenes action, illustrates Newport County Football Club's often-troubled history from its formation in 1912 through 1960 and the departure of Bill Lucas as manager.
The part played by employees of Lysaght's Works in the club’s beginnings is thoroughly recorded, as are the roles of the early managers. Then, through the 1920s and early
19.305 we see secretary/manager ]immy Hindmarsh regularly building teams capable of success, only to find financial pressures forcing the sale of his best players.
The 1939 promotion from the old Third Division (South) under Billy McCandless is shown in thrilling detail, and there are some rare pictures from County's brief debut in the Second Division of 1939-40 which was sadly cut short by war. Post-war yearsand some memorable FA Cup matches are recalled, as are all the club’s well-known and not-so=familiar players of its first half-century.

The book is the work of radio football commentator Richard Shepherd who has built on his own extensive archive photograph collection using pictures belonging to many former players and their families. It is certain to provide a great deal of nostalgia for people who remember one of the most popular sporting organisations in South-
East Wales — Newport County FC. The club is sorely 1
missed.
