As noted by When Saturday Comes Magazine, this "meticulously researched, beautifully presented" tome represents seven years of dedicated work, and every page reflects this thorough commitment.
The journey begins at Aberdeen's Pittodrie Stadium, where the biting North Sea wind whips across the terraces, creating an atmosphere that's uniquely Scottish. Bayly's meticulous attention to detail captures not only the structural elements but also the essence of each stadium. As The Sportsman rightfully observes, this work serves as the "perfect coffeetable relaxer," though its significance extends far beyond casual browsing.
What sets this compilation apart, as Late Tackle Magazine emphasises, is its celebration of "the sheer scale and diversity of football in the British Isles." From the hallowed turf of Manchester United's Old Trafford to the humble charm of Dorchester Town's Avenue Stadium, each venue is given equal reverence and attention.
The author's photographic prowess, developed since 2016, brings these grounds to vivid life. His particular affinity for grounds in the Lake District, Wales and Scotland resulted in some of the most striking imagery in contemporary football literature. The Scotsman's inclusion of this work in their "Best Books of 2020" amplifies its visual impact.
Groundtastic Magazine's assertion that "your bookcase is incomplete" without this volume rings particularly true when one considers the comprehensive nature of the research. Bayly doesn't merely document the physical structures; he weaves in the human stories, the local histories, and the cultural significance of each ground. Whether it's a Premier League cathedral of sport or a non-league ground nestled against a mediaeval castle, each venue is treated with the same meticulous attention to detail.
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Published: November 2, 2020
Price: £25.00
Hardback: 320 pages
ISBN-10: 1785316478
ISBN-13: 978-1785316470
248 x 287 x 23 (mm)
Lavishly illustrated
NEW – PRISTINE – SEALED – NEVER BEEN OPENED

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1060/2756/files/British-Football_s-Greatest-Grounds-Cover-2026.png?v=1774089575
leeds-united-football-club
Leeds United Football Club

Are you a family member or an ancestor in one of the 100's of pictures?

Leeds United is one of the world's largest and proudest football teams. Mostly recognized for his first tenure at Leeds United and Juventus, he was considered by several people as the best all-around football player to originate from Wales. Charles is regarded as one of the all-time great football players at times.

Charles went from Swansea Town, his native club, to Leeds United in 1949, where he started his career. Because of his power, speed, technique, vision, talent in the air, and eye for goal, he was equally skilled as a striker and defense. Charles was played more often as a forward after his return from National Service in 1952, and in 1954 he led the Second Division in goals scored. He was elected club captain the next year, and he guided the team to promotion and second place in his debut season in that role. Charles finished the 1956–57 season with Leeds in ninth position and as the top scorer in the First Division. After Charles joined Juventus in the summer of 1957, he teamed up with Giampiero Boniperti and Omar Sívori, and the three of them became known as The Holy Trident. He won the Coppa Italia twice and the Scudetto three times in his five seasons with the team. He was also named the 1957–58 season's capocannoniere winner. Charles went back to Leeds in 1962, but his stay was short-lived since he was used to playing in Italy. By the end of the year, he had joined Roma. After returning home to play for Cardiff City, Charles managed players at Hereford United and Merthyr Tydfil to round out his non-league career. Because he never kicked or purposely injured an opponent player, he was never warned or dismissed throughout his whole career [6]. This gave rise to the moniker Il Gigante Buono (The Gentle Giant), which he earned while playing for Juventus.(5) He was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame as one of the first honorees in 2002, and he was included among the Football League 100 Legends in 1998.

From 1950 to 1965, he was a member of the Welsh national team for fifteen years. He competed for Wales in the 1958 FIFA World Cup with his brother Mel Charles. He scored in a 1-1 tie with Hungary during the tournament, but he was hurt in a play-off matchup with the same team. Pelé scored the game's winning goal as Wales fell 1-0 and were eliminated from the quarterfinal encounter against Brazil. Jimmy Murphy, the manager of Wales, expressed his opinion that Wales may have won if Charles had been healthy.

In November 2003, Charles was selected as the Golden Player of Wales by his national association. Drawing on his own childhood in post-war Manchester, Hague paints evocative scenes of drizzly streets, idolised heroes like the Busby Babes, and the simple thrill of rifling through a fresh stack of programmes. His writing, shaped by decades as a respected urban planning academic and columnist for publications like The Scotsman and The Independent, is both deeply personal and effortlessly authoritative.
Hague excels in revealing the hidden treasures concealed within the pages of these programmes. He shows how each artefact, from the chaos of wartime football—where players dodged air raids and borrowed boots—to the oddball adverts and clumsy poetry that coloured the margins, serves as a window into the social, cultural, and economic backdrop of its time. These programmes are more than memorabilia—they’re living documents, capturing the spirit and struggles of communities across Britain and beyond.
As the book moves through decades, Hague explores football’s transformation: from the gritty “Slum Game” to the global spectacle it is today, complete with superstar players, corporate sponsors, and the rise of fan-owned clubs. Yet, amid all the change, the programmes remain a constant—chronicling everything from World Cup triumphs to the fleeting glory of schoolboy internationals who never quite made it. Hague’s knack for finding the funny, the quirky, and the poignant in these stories makes for irresistible reading.
Programmes! Programmes! isn’t just a nostalgia trip. It’s a tribute to the way football—through the humble match programme—mirrors the world around it. Hague’s unusual combination of scholarship and fan devotion ensures that every reader, whether a diehard collector or a casual supporter, will find something to cherish. This book is a testament to his lifelong passion and his remarkable ability to bring football’s history to life, one programme at a time.
Soccer programmes have become a smart investment for collectors and fans alike. The 1970s were a time when Leeds, under the management of Don Revie, rose from the depths of the Second Division to become one of the most formidable teams in Europe. However, this success was often overshadowed by the "Dirty Leeds" reputation, which lingered due to their aggressive playing style and frequent controversies.

Tomlinson's book covers the pivotal moments of this decade, starting with Leeds United's first league championship victory in 1969 and moving through the decade's highs and lows. Highlights include the heart-wrenching near-miss of a treble in 1970, the celebrated FA Cup win in 1972, the shocking defeat by Sunderland in 1973, and the triumphant second league title in 1974. The narrative also delves into the infamous 1975 European Cup final loss to Bayern Munich and the match-fixing allegations that clouded Don Revie's legacy.

The book doesn't shy away from the tumultuous succession of managers that followed Revie's departure, including the brief and tumultuous tenure of Brian Clough and the challenges faced by Jock Stein. With the show's recent transition to its new presenting trio of Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan, this 2026 edition serves as both a continuation of tradition and a fresh chapter in MOTD's storied history.
Like its predecessors, this year retains the winning formula that made it a Christmas favourite. A familiar mix of football trivia, puzzles, and games has returned, but there's been a notable effort to modernise the content for today's younger fans. The inclusion of both men's and women's football coverage shows how far the sport has come, though some might wish for even more equal representation.
The annual's strongest feature is its accessibility. Whether you're a casual viewer or a stats-obsessed superfan, there's something here for everyone. The design of the puzzles is clever and challenging without being frustrating, and the trivia sections provide genuine moments of discovery. The cartoons, a long-time staple of these annuals, maintain their charm and humour.
However, where the annual slight disappoints is in its depth. While the top 10 lists and quick-hit factoids are entertaining, more detailed player profiles or tactical analysis would have been welcome additions for older readers. The games section, while fun, feels repetitive if you've owned previous editions.
The production values remain high, with vibrant graphics and an intuitive layout that makes navigation effortless. The paper quality and binding are robust enough to withstand the repeated handling it's likely to receive from enthusiastic young fans.
If parents are concerned about age appropriateness, this annual event is ideal for children aged 7-14, but football enthusiasts of all ages will also find enjoyment in it. Fundamentally, it's a celebration of the beautiful game that simultaneously combines educational and entertaining aspects.
Worth noting is how the annual incorporates current football trends and developments while maintaining its timeless appeal. It's this balance of contemporary relevance and classic entertainment that has kept MOTD annuals at the top of Christmas lists for generations.
Bottom Line: While not revolutionary, the Match of the Day Annual 2026 delivers exactly what fans want: a reliable, entertaining companion to the world's most popular sport. Despite its somewhat safe format, it's a worthy addition to any young football fan's bookshelf.
We recommend it to young football enthusiasts, quiz lovers, and anyone seeking a comprehensive yet accessible guide to the current state of football.

ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48

Publisher: Ebury Publishing
Published: September 18, 2025
Price: £9.99
ISBN-10: 785948393
ISBN-13: 9781785948398
Hardback: 96 pages
Dimensions: 213 x 286 mm

Jack Charlton
The Autobiography

The book and protective dust jacket are in excellent condition. His masterstroke came in signing Gordon Strachan, whose leadership would prove invaluable in the years to come.
The 1992 League Championship was the ultimate reward in the early 1990s. This triumph, made even more special as the last First Division title before the Premier League era, represented more than just a trophy. It was vindication for years of patience and perseverance. Yet success proved double-edged, as the rapid ascent perhaps came too quickly for the club to sustain its position at the summit.
The latter part of the decade saw further drama with the arrival of George Graham and later David O'Leary, whose "babies"—the young team he assembled—captured imaginations but ultimately fell short of matching Wilkinson's achievements. Through it all, Leeds United's story remained one of extreme highs and lows, a reflection of football's changing face as the sport transformed from a working-class passion into big business.
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Publisher: Visit Amberley Publishing
Published: October 15, 2023
Price: £13.99
Paperback: 160 pages
ISBN-10: 1398114197
ISBN-13: 978-1398114197
Dimensions: 236 x 156 (mm)

The Greatest Team You Love to Hate

The winter of 1969 had a profound impact on Elland Road. Leeds United's white-shirted warriors crowded the terraces, their breath visible in the frigid Yorkshire air as they took to the field. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we were witnessing the unfolding of history through each muddy tackle.
Don Revie stood in his usual spot, hands thrust deep in his pockets, his face a mask of concentration. He'd built this team from nothing — a collection of local lads transformed into football royalty. Billy Bremner, all five feet five inches of him, prowled the midfield like a lion. Johnny Giles, with his surgeon's precision, carved open defences that stood firm against the best in Europe. And big Jack Charlton, towering at the back, made strikers think twice about venturing too close.
We called them 'Dirty Leeds' back then, but that was just jealousy talk. In reality, they played football that was truly captivating. One-touch passing sequences that would make the Brazilians proud, mixed with a Yorkshire grit that could grind down any opposition. The Scratching Shed would erupt in waves of noise, our scarves held high, voices hoarse from singing "Marching On Together".
I remember watching Norman Hunter – 'Bites Yer Legs' Hunter, as we called him, demolished Manchester United's attack one particularly fierce afternoon. The visitors arrived with confidence, eager to impart their knowledge to us. They departed, defeated 5-1. That was the thing about Revie's Leeds — they didn't just win games; they crushed spirits.
But it wasn't all glory. For every triumph, there seemed to be a heartbreak lurking around the corner. The 1970 FA Cup final still haunts me — Chelsea snatching victory in the replay after we'd dominated for so long. Yet somehow, these setbacks only made the team stronger and more determined. That was Revie's greatest achievement: he didn't just build a team; he forged a brotherhood. The Sons of Revie, as we came to know them, carried that spirit through every match and every season, writing their names in football folklore one game at a time.
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Published: April 22, 2024
Price: £16.99
Hardcover: 288 pages
ISBN-10: 1801507007
ISBN-13: 978-1801507004
Dimensions: 145 x 223 (mm)

THE MASTER PLAN
How Revie Built Leeds' Greatest Team

The summer of 1963 dawned with an air of quiet determination at Elland Road. Don Revie, his face weathered by the Yorkshire elements, stood on the touchline watching his young charges train. The previous seasons had been extremely challenging for Leeds United, a once proud club, as they found themselves in a precarious position near the Third Division trapdoor.
But Revie wasn't your ordinary gaffer. He'd spent the past months meticulously crafting something special, though few outside the club's inner sanctum could see it. The blend was peculiar: seasoned professionals mixed with wet-behind-the-ears teenagers who'd barely started shaving. Critics scoffed, but Revie knew better.
Johnny Giles arrived from Manchester United that summer, a transfer that raised more than a few eyebrows. At £33,000, some believed Revie had made a mistake. But the Irishman's arrival marked the beginning of something extraordinary. Together with Billy Bremner, a fiery Scotsman who played with heart, they formed a midfield partnership that would become legendary.
The training methods were revolutionary for their time. While other clubs stuck to lapping the pitch and five-a-side matches, Revie introduced detailed dossiers on opposition teams. Every player received a folder containing intricate details about their opposite number—their strengths, weaknesses, and preferred foot. It was unheard of in English football.
The 'Dirty Leeds' tag hadn't stuck yet, but the foundations were being laid. Their success was not due to malice or cynicism but rather to a level of professionalism that verged on obsession. Revie's lads weren't just footballers; they were students of the game, analysing, adapting, and evolving.
By autumn, the transformation was already visible. The team moved differently and thought unconventionally. The old Leeds United, the one that had flirted with relegation, was disappearing into the Yorkshire mist, replaced by something altogether more formidable. Local supporters, their flat caps pulled low against the wind, began whispering about promotion. They'd seen false dawns before, but this time felt different. The moment felt real.
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Published: March 27, 2025
Price: £16.99
Hardcover: 288 pages
ISBN-10: 1801501831
ISBN-13: 978-1801501835
Dimensions: 152 x 228 (mm)
Lavishly illustrated

Hardcover with Dust Jacket 368 pages
Back Where We Belong
Leeds United's Premier League Destiny

In his meticulously researched chronicle of Leeds United, Jonny Cooper masterfully weaves together statistics and storytelling, creating a tapestry that captures the club's illustrious history. As Cooper observes in the initial chapters, Leeds United's essence has always transcended mere statistics on a scoresheet, embodying the essence of Yorkshire football.
The author's unique position as both an Opta statistician and a lifelong supporter allows him to paint a picture that's both analytically precise and emotionally resonant. His description of the Don Revie era is particularly compelling, offering fresh insights into how the legendary manager transformed a middling Second Division side into one of Europe's most formidable teams.
Cooper's narrative truly shines when discussing the statistical anomalies that have defined Leeds' journey. For instance, he reveals that during the 1971–72 season, Leeds set a record for the longest unbeaten run in English top-flight football, conceding merely 24 goals in 42 matches—a defensive masterclass that exemplified Revie's tactical brilliance.
The book takes a fascinating turn when examining the club's more recent history. Cooper's analysis of the Marcelo Bielsa era is particularly enlightening, using data to demonstrate how the Argentine's high-intensity pressing game transformed not just results, but the very DNA of Leeds United's playing style. His detailed breakdown of the promotion-winning 2024-25 season under Daniel Farke offers compelling evidence of how modern analytics have become integral to football success.
What sets this work apart is Cooper's ability to humanise statistics. Rather than merely presenting cold, hard numbers, he contextualised them within the broader narrative of Leeds United's rich tapestry. Whether discussing Billy Bremner's tackle success rate or Patrick Bamford's expected goals ratio, each statistic serves to enhance our understanding of the club's journey.
The author's intimate knowledge of the Elland Road atmosphere adds an extra layer of authenticity. His description of the famous "Marching on Together" anthem reverberating around the stadium during crucial matches helps readers understand why Leeds United continues to captivate football fans worldwide, regardless of their allegiance.
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Publisher: Visit Orion Publishing Group
Published: August 14, 2025
Price: £22.00
Hardcover: 368 pages
ISBN-10: 1788216830
ISBN-13: 978-1399636797
Dimensions: 240 x 156 (mm)

 Hardcover 224 pages
Where Football Meets Fantasy
The World's Most Extraordinary Pitches

From the misty shores of the Scottish Hebrides to the dazzling modernism of Qatar's World Cup venues, Ryan Herman's "Remarkable Football Grounds" takes readers on an extraordinary journey through football's most captivating venues. With his trademark rigor and deep-rooted passion for Leeds United, Tomlinson unpacks the turbulent years spanning 1996 to 2005—a period that saw the club soar into the Champions League only to plummet into bankruptcy and relegation. Drawing on decades of encyclopedic knowledge and a lifelong devotion to the Whites, Tomlinson’s narrative is as authoritative as it is heartbreaking, offering a front-row seat to both the dreams and disillusionments of a fervent fanbase.
Tomlinson, whose previous works like "Leeds United: A History" and "The Man With the Plan: Howard Wilkinson's Leeds United" have become essential reading for any Leeds supporter, once again demonstrates his knack for meticulous research and storytelling. In "Doing a Leeds," he provides new revelations and exclusive interviews with key figures such as Howard Wilkinson and Michael Ricketts, peeling back the curtain on boardroom machinations, legal entanglements, and ill-fated gambles. His account draws from unique access, including insights from Leeds United Supporters' Trust chairman John Boocock, whose firsthand dealings with board members add rare depth to the story.
What elevates Tomlinson’s latest book is his ability to weave the fans’ perspective into the fabric of the club’s collapse. He captures the sense of betrayal and frustration felt by supporters as mismanagement and personal ambition sent the club into a tailspin. Tomlinson’s writing is at once analytical and empathetic, presenting the implosion not just as a financial cautionary tale, but as a deeply human tragedy that shattered the hopes of a city and its people.
"Doing a Leeds" stands as both a warning and a tribute, a forensic dissection of boardroom blunders, and a heartfelt homage to the resilience of Leeds United’s supporters. Tomlinson’s latest work cements his reputation as the definitive chronicler of Leeds United’s history, combining insider access, journalistic integrity, and the kind of insight that can only come from a true supporter. For anyone seeking to understand how a club can lose its way—and what it means for those who love it—this is essential reading.
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Published: August 18, 2025
Price: £19.99
Paperback: 256 pages
ISBN-10: 1836801726
ISBN-13: 978-1836801726
Dimensions: 222 x 144 (mm)

From Teamsheets to Treasures
The Evolution of Football Programmes

Football doesn’t look much like it did back in the days of centre partings, laced balls, and muddy pitches, but one thing’s stayed the same for over a century: fans still buy matchday programs. What began as a basic teamsheet to help spectators figure out who was on the pitch has slowly evolved into today’s glossy, magazine-style souvenir, packed with player profiles, interviews, and trivia. Through all the changes—from cloth-capped crowds to stadiums filled with smartphones—football supporters have always wanted to be in the know and, more recently, to be entertained.

This book digs into the fascinating history of the football program, tracing how it’s grown from humble beginnings into a serious collector’s item. There’s plenty of attention given to some of the rarest and most sought-after issues, like the 1915 FA Cup final program from Old Trafford, which sold at auction for an eye-watering £11,500. Written by John Litster—editor of Britain’s top program collectors’ magazine and a genuine expert—The Football Programme features more than 150 iconic examples and captures the story of these nostalgic treasures that hold a special place in the hearts of thousands of fans.

Soccer programmes have become a smart investment for collectors and fans alike. Unlike mass-produced memorabilia, each programme is a unique time capsule—capturing the teams, players, and cultural quirks of a specific match day. As football’s popularity has soared, rare programmes from historic games or milestone events have only grown in value, often fetching impressive sums at auction. Beyond the financial rewards, they offer something priceless: a tangible link to the past, filled with stories, adverts, and lineups you won’t find anywhere else. Collectors know that as clubs evolve and digital replaces print, these physical programmes will become even scarcer. Whether you’re after the thrill of the hunt, the joy of nostalgia, or the hope of future profit, investing in soccer programmes is a way to own a piece of the game’s living history—a small, paper window into football’s soul. ~ The Soccerbooks Team
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Price: £12.99
Published: 2007
Softcover: 160 pages
Lavishly illustrated

THE BIRTH OF AN ICON! Relive the best Roy of the Rovers stories from the 1950s in this exciting anthology of reprinted classic strips, celebrating over 65 years of the iconic football comic.

THE LONG HARD ROAD TO WEMBLEY! This volume, expertly written by Tom Tully and brought to life by David Sque’s energetic illustrations, doesn’t just serve up nostalgia—it’s a genuinely gripping sports drama that stands tall even for readers who didn’t grow up with the comic in their weekly rotation. Roy Race and his beloved club undergo a significant transformation during the 80/81 season. The Rovers are struggling on all fronts: relegation hangs over them like a storm cloud, their dreams of FA Cup and European glory are dashed early, and the trophy cabinet sits depressingly empty.
For Roy, the pressure is relentless. Roy's obsession with keeping the team afloat has a significant impact on his family life and negatively affects his relationships with key teammates, particularly the notoriously fiery Vic Guthrie. The story delves into the cracks that form both on and off the pitch, demonstrating how even a football hero can succumb to the pressure of expectation. The emotional realism gives the narrative depth, making Roy’s struggles feel authentic and relatable.
However, the most shocking aspect is the attempt on Roy's life. The storyline where Roy is gunned down in December 1981 is handled with a sense of drama that goes beyond the typical comic strip. Roy’s weeks in a coma leave a void at Melchester, and the legendary Sir Alf Ramsey stepping in as caretaker manager adds a sense of gravitas and realism you don’t expect from a football comic. There’s this constant sense of the club teetering on the edge—not just of relegation, but of total collapse. Yet through all the turmoil, there’s still a sense of fun: the introduction of Gola-sponsored kits, the glimmers of hope on the pitch, and the larger-than-life personalities that keep the story from ever getting too bleak.
This collection distinguishes itself by skilfully balancing soap opera melodrama with football authenticity. The stakes off the pitch feel just as real as those on it. Tully’s writing digs into the psychology of an athlete under pressure, and Sque’s illustrations capture the breakneck pace of the matches. For long-time fans, this volume is a celebration of everything that made Roy of the Rovers an institution. For newcomers, it’s a surprisingly fresh and engaging entry point into football’s most iconic comic. To add visual appeal, many photos—especially on covers and center spreads—were black-and-white prints that artists then hand-coloured. This gave the images a distinctive, sometimes slightly surreal look, with bright, flat colors and bold contrasts.
These hand-coloured photos were created by artists who painted directly onto black-and-white images, using watercolors, dyes, or tinted oils to bring them to life with vivid, often slightly surreal colours. It was born from relentless preparation, a deep bond with the fans, and a belief that hard work could still topple the giants. This spirit didn’t just shape the men’s team; it set a standard for Leeds United Women and the academy, inspiring new generations across the city. Hall’s sharp narrative meticulously explores how Allan Clarke, Eddie Gray, and Billy Bremner, revered as heirs to Don Revie’s legacy, grappled with the impossible task of restoring the club’s former glory. As Hall reveals in vivid detail, Clarke’s promise of silverware ended in relegation, Gray’s nurturing of Leeds United’s talented youth was ultimately stifled by time, and Bremner—iconic on the pitch—came heartbreakingly close to promotion and FA Cup success, only for hopes to collapse in the dying moments.
Ian Hall’s book is essential reading for anyone fascinated by football history and the unique culture of Leeds United. Through candid interviews with players and staff who lived through the post-Revie era, Hall exposes the raw emotion and relentless pressure faced by those trying to revive a fallen giant. The author’s long-standing commitment to football writing, coupled with his deep admiration for the club, shines through on every page, making this account both authoritative and deeply personal. Hall’s careful research and storytelling ensure that each chapter resonates with authenticity and passion for the beautiful game.
What sets Revie’s Boys apart is Hall’s ability to situate Leeds United’s struggles within the broader context of English football. He examines the brutal consequences of life in the second tier, where plummeting attendances forced Elland Road’s sale and the club’s very identity was challenged. Hall’s expertise is evident as he unpacks the tactical decisions, boardroom battles, and shifting fortunes that defined this era, all while celebrating the indomitable spirit of players and supporters alike. His work invites readers to consider not only what went wrong, but also the enduring lessons for today’s Leeds United.
For Leeds fans, football historians, and anyone drawn to stories of triumph and heartbreak, Ian Hall’s Revie’s Boys is a must-read. The book’s careful blend of nostalgia, analysis, and firsthand testimony makes it a compelling addition to the literature of British football. Hall’s thoughtful approach ensures that even as he recounts a period of despair, he honours the resilience of those who wore the famous white shirt and those who still fill Elland Road with hope. A History Through Football Programmes.” Crooks, celebrated for his meticulous research and engaging storytelling, traces the evolution of football and British society through the humble matchday programme. From the earliest days of the Victorian era, Crooks reveals how programmes reflect seismic shifts – from the introduction of the 2-3-5 formation to the advertisements for tobacco, local breweries, and the annual beauty contests that once filled their pages.
The book delves into major events that shaped both football and the nation, including the profound impact of the two World Wars on daily life, the sport, and the content of matchday programmes. Crooks’ analysis of the 1958 Munich air disaster, with particular attention to Manchester United and the solidarity shown by rival clubs, highlights the unique place these documents hold in chronicling football’s emotional history.
Equally, Crooks explores the darker chapters, such as the rise of hooliganism and the portrayal of tragedy in programmes following the Heysel and Hillsborough disasters. His sensitive, insightful commentary demonstrates how programmes became a canvas for collective grief, concern, and ultimately, change.
From the creation of the Premier League to the digital age, Richard Crooks masterfully showcases how football programmes mirror the cultural, economic, and social transformations of the past 150 years. He watched helplessly as Wales fell, by the slimmest of margins, to a single Brazilian goal. Brazil, of course, went on to seize the trophy.
Yet questions persist. Was it mere misfortune that kept the great John Charles from that pitch? Or something more? Some say the air around the Welsh camp felt heavy with inevitability, as if forces unseen were determined to tip the scales. What might have happened, football romantics wonder, had Charles—unhindered, uninjured—stood shoulder to shoulder with his teammates against a young Pelé and his Brazilian side? Would the course of football history have shifted? Would Wales have stunned the world?
It’s a question that haunts the corridors of football folklore, a tantalising “what if” that keeps the legend of John Charles—and that fateful match—alive in the imagination.
ROYAL MAIL TRACKED 48
Publisher: Stanley Paul (Ceased Trading).
Published: 1957
Price: £9.99
Hardback: 160 pages
ISBN-13: No issued in 1957
Dimensions: 145 x 225 x 2 cm

Delivered Worldwide — No fan left out
Discover the 2026 World Cup
Teams, Cities and Star Players

The **FIFA World Cup 26: The Official Guide** by Keir Radnedge offers football enthusiasts the most complete overview of the tournament set to make global history.
