Sunderland’s Legends
Fans, and Forgotten Moments
Are you or a loved one featured in the 100's of historic club photos?
Few books capture the spirit and soul of a football club like Sunderland A.F.C. and Roker Park Voices. This volume contains over a hundred historic photographs, each serving as a window into a distinct era of Sunderland's past. From sepia-toned action shots on muddy pitches to candid moments in the stands, these images chronicle not only the evolution of the club but also the changing face of the city and its people. Every photograph is a reminder of the generations that have passed through the gates of Roker Park, each leaving a mark on Sunderland’s proud footballing story.
The authors—Alan Brett, George Hoare, and Andrew Clark—deserve enormous credit for their painstaking work in assembling this archive. Their lifelong passion for the club shines through in the attention to detail, the careful selection of images, and the affection visible on every page. The hundreds of photos are the book's backbone, bringing to life the highs, lows, and everyday moments that make up Sunderland AFC. These photographs transcend mere matchday snapshots, serving as family portraits that encapsulate the vitality of the terraces and the visages of those who contributed to the legendary status of Roker Park.
What sets this book apart is how it blends these powerful images with the spoken memories of fans and players. The voices of Roker Park echo through the stories, anecdotes, and recollections that accompany each photograph. These memories, often bittersweet, sometimes humorous, and always heartfelt, provide a glimpse into what it truly meant to be a supporter, standing on the terraces in all weather conditions, immersing themselves in every kick of the ball. Through these voices, the book becomes more than just a history—it’s a shared experience, a living memory bank for anyone who ever stood at Roker Park.
For lifelong supporters and newcomers alike, Sunderland A.F.C. and Roker Park Voices is essential reading. The hundreds of historic photographs serve not just as a record but as a celebration—a reminder of how football binds a community together. This is a book to be pored over, cherished, and revisited time and again. With every turn of the page, the legacy of Sunderland AFC and the magic of Roker Park are kept alive for future generations.
