Airdrieonians FC, affectionately known as **The Diamonds**, hold a distinctive place in Scottish football history. The club established its reputation during the late nineteenth century and went on to enjoy a golden period during the 1920s, culminating in victory over Hibernian in the **1924 Scottish FA Cup Final**. Between 1922 and 1926, only Rangers and Celtic prevented Airdrieonians from winning the Scottish League, while their numerous cup runs and appearances in major finals provided generations of supporters with memorable occasions. The Diamonds' story is filled with remarkable footballing landmarks. The game's first-ever penalty kick was awarded in an Airdrie match in 1891, while the club enjoyed an extraordinary 33-year uninterrupted spell in Scotland's top division after winning the Second League in 1902/03. Legendary centre-forward **Hughie Gallacher** rose to prominence with Airdrie, while Stanley Matthews appeared in the famous 1940 War Cup semi-final replay. Broomfield also witnessed the first penalty shoot-out in world football when Airdrie defeated Nottingham Forest in the inaugural British Cup in 1970. Behind these achievements was a club whose players often trained for only a few hours each week after completing their everyday jobs as teachers, electricians, builders, salesmen and dustmen. Airdrieonians' original story came to a sad conclusion when the club entered full liquidation in May 2002, becoming the first Scottish senior club to go out of business since Third Lanark in 1967. Yet the footballing spirit of Airdrie endured, with Airdrie United carrying the town's traditions forward and ensuring that the famous diamond jersey returned to the field — Diamonds Are Forever.
