Relive the Magic of 1956’s
Greatest Sporting Moments!
If you were a lad in ‘56, chances are you’d have been chuffed to bits flicking through the latest Raymond Glendenning’s Book of Sport for Boys. This sixth annual, curated by the BBC’s own “voice of sport,” is a proper treat—packed to the rafters with up-to-date features, cracking photos, and canny hints straight from the great and the good of British sport. The Sports Brains Trust returns, sharper than ever, alongside the always-popular Prize Competition that’ll have you scratching your head in the best way.
Under the direction of Raymond Glendenning, this volume delves into the highlights and pitfalls of Britain's sporting year. He’s roped in the likes of Danny Blanchflower, Tom Graveney, Ronnie Moore, and a host of other legends—blokes who’ve not only played the game but written the headlines, too. As always, Frank Richards, the mastermind behind Billy Bunter and Greyfriars, crafts a captivating narrative in the annual, preserving the spirit of the schoolboy.
With sporting culture stitched into every page—cricket, footy, speedway and more—this book’s a snapshot of British sport in all its muddy, glorious brilliance. Whether you’re a budding center-forward or just a guy who loves a good sporting tale, Glendenning’s annual is a must-have for any bookshelf in Blighty.
The Annual's Condition
The annual is in excellent condition; the orange cloth boards are bright and spotless, and the binding is as tight as when first published. Every page inside is clean and vivid, with only a crossword completed by a previous owner as a gentle reminder of its past life. The black and white photographs are sharp and brilliant, capturing all the sporting moments in fine detail. There’s just the faintest trace of spotting along the outer page edges, scarcely worth mentioning. The dust jacket, which has admirably protected the book for seventy years, is entirely present with only minor shelf wear, a few chips and tears, and the original, unclipped price of 10/6. We’ve thoroughly cleaned and refreshed the jacket, finishing with our Archival Dust Jacket System for added preservation. This copy is, without doubt, a genuine collector’s piece.
