The Aston Villa Story 1980-81

Regular price £9.99 £0.00
An illustrated history of Aston Villa Football Club, League Champions, 1980-81.
The famous Birmingham club of Aston Villa is one of the aristocrats of the Football League. Founded by a team of cricketers in 1874, by 1920 Villa had won the FA Cup and the First Division Championship six times each, and in 1897 had won the coveted ‘double’. That form could hardly be maintained, of course, but the club has never been out of the First Division for long.
However, despite Villa's own high standards, the story is not only one of success, but also one of redemption. For in 1975, after eight traumatic years in the wilderness and a painful saga of boardroom battles, the great club returned to the First Division. Ron Saunders’s team has twice won the League Cup and now, after winning the Championship, looks set for further honours in the 1980s.
With the help of a wealth of photographs, Ian Johnson recalls the club’s colourful history, its glorious achievements and its many famous teams. Individuals too, notably Villa’s illustrious line of thrilling strikers, from old heroes like Harry Hampton and Pongo Waring to exciting new talents like Peter Withe and Gary Shaw, all find a place in this handsome tribute to a club that has as distinguished a past and as bright a future as any in the land.
A first edition, first printing published by Arthur Barker in 1981. A near-fine book in very good condition, clean boards, tight binding, not price clipped, and a clean dust jacket completely covered with the Archive Dust Jacket System.
