Born in Loanhead, Scotland, Tommy Johnston enjoyed a long career during which he played in every class of football. Beginning with juvenile football with Loanhead Mayflower FC and Peebles Rovers FC, he progressed to the professional game with Kilmarnock FC before moving south of the border. There he played for one Welsh club (Newport County) and no fewer than six English clubs : Darlington, Oldham Athletic, Norwich City, Leyton Orient (two spells), Blackburn Rovers and Gillingham.
